Historically, surgical training followed the “See one, do one, teach one” model, where practical skills were acquired directly in the operating room under an apprenticeship system. While this approach was effective for generations, the increasing complexity of surgeries and the focus on patient safety necessitate new methods. Prior to the shift to the OR-X, anatomical approach courses were organized by the Balgrist University Hospital (UHB) and conducted at the University of Zurich’s Institute of Anatomy. These courses, while foundational, relied heavily on self-study and lacked the advanced technological integration that modern training demands.
A Modern Approach to Surgical Training at OR-X
In October 2023, the anatomical approach courses were successfully transferred to the OR-X. Led by senior physicians from UHB, these courses emphasize hands-on learning in both Dry- and Wetlabs, where residents perform ex-vivo surgeries using real surgical instruments on anatomical models or specimens. The curriculum is continuously evolving, incorporating feedback from both residents and attending physicians at UHB to meet their specific needs.
In addition, the involvement of industry partners in the courses offers a significant advantage for the residents. By familiarizing themselves with the latest surgical instruments and technologies early in their training, participants gain invaluable exposure to the tools and techniques they will later encounter in their professional surgical practice.
