Expansion of Resident Doctor Courses by 2025

OR-X launches comprehensive orthopedic resident courses in 2025, supported by Zurich’s Department of Health.

Starting next year, OR-X will serve as the central hub for orthopedic resident training in the Canton of Zurich, following approval and support from the department of health. Opening our courses to all residents in the Canton and beyond represents a significant advancement in both regional and national orthopedic education, ensuring alignment with modern expectations for patient safety and technological innovation. Our state-of-the-art operating room infrastructure provides a realistic and controlled environment where residents can safely and efficiently enhance their surgical skills.

Traditional Training vs. OR-X’s Enhanced Curriculum

Traditional Training vs. OR-X’s Enhanced Curriculum

Historically, surgical training followed the “See one, do one, teach one” model, where practical skills were acquired directly in the operating room under an apprenticeship system. While this approach was effective for generations, the increasing complexity of surgeries and the focus on patient safety necessitate new methods. Prior to the shift to the OR-X, anatomical approach courses were organized by the Balgrist University Hospital (UHB) and conducted at the University of Zurich’s Institute of Anatomy. These courses, while foundational, relied heavily on self-study and lacked the advanced technological integration that modern training demands.

A Modern Approach to Surgical Training at OR-X

In October 2023, the anatomical approach courses were successfully transferred to the OR-X. Led by senior physicians from UHB, these courses emphasize hands-on learning in both Dry- and Wetlabs, where residents perform ex-vivo surgeries using real surgical instruments on anatomical models or specimens. The curriculum is continuously evolving, incorporating feedback from both residents and attending physicians at UHB to meet their specific needs.

In addition, the involvement of industry partners in the courses offers a significant advantage for the residents. By familiarizing themselves with the latest surgical instruments and technologies early in their training, participants gain invaluable exposure to the tools and techniques they will later encounter in their professional surgical practice.

Looking Ahead to 2025

From 2025, our resident courses will be available to all orthopedic residents in the Canton of Zurich and Switzerland. As a new feature, our courses will follow a hybrid-learning model, giving participants access to the Augmedi e-learning platform. This platform combines photorealistic 3D models with an own developed AI Learning Engine. The incorporation of this new platform helps residents familiarize themselves with the anatomy of the treated body part and track their learning progress in preparation for the course. A significant proportion of the course costs for residents at Zurich hospitals are subsidised by the Canton's Department of Health in order to promote the development of surgical talent. Around 150 clinical training positions in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology benefit from this programme. This initiative provides residents the opportunity to hone their skills in a realistic surgical setting under the guidance of experienced surgeons.
